What You Should Know about Dental Insurance
Dental insurance is a valuable benefit that allows many patients to receive treatment who would not otherwise be able to afford it. Since it is a contract between your employer and the insurance company, they negotiate what your plan will cover.
As such, dental insurance rarely covers 100% of any dental procedure; some plans cover less than 50%, while others provide no coverage. Your plan also includes an annual dollar amount, and once you have reached it, your plan will not cover any other services, including essential dentistry. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with your plan booklet and which services are covered and which are not.
In many cases, dental insurance companies require a pre-determination of benefits for procedures. Unfortunately, this can be a time-consuming process, and there are situations where we simply cannot wait to perform treatment.
If it is necessary to perform treatment before we receive the determination, please understand that your insurance may still refuse to pay in this eventuality. While we always do our best to maximize your benefits and provide you with treatment estimates that are as accurate as possible, you may still be responsible for the final treatment cost.
Coverage for Elective Treatments
Some services, such as cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, and orthodontics, can dramatically enhance your life. But dental insurance companies consider these procedures to be elective and typically cover little if any of the cost. For this reason, you will rarely see these services included as part of your benefits.
