Crowns & Bridges

Modern dentistry offers more ways than ever to restore your smile to full health. However, time-tested solutions like dental crowns and bridges continue to be excellent options to fix broken or missing teeth.

At Vermont Hills Family Dental, we offer beautiful and durable porcelain crowns and bridges that restore your ability to speak and chew comfortably and smile with confidence. Using the most updated materials and her eye for artistry, Dr. Christine Brown customizes tooth restorations to restore the natural beauty of your smile.

Dental Crowns Give You Back Your Smile

Tooth fillings go a long way in helping us preserve the natural structure of your teeth. However, there are some cases where a compromised tooth requires greater strength and protection, and we would recommend a dental crown. This might occur because:

  • A cavity is too large to repair with a tooth filling
  • A root-canaled tooth needs added strength and protection
  • A dental implant requires a crown to restore function and appearance
  • A tooth is poorly proportioned, and a crown is required for aesthetic reasons

Getting a porcelain tooth crown typically requires two visits to our Portland dental office. During the first, we prepare the tooth for the crown and take impressions that we use to create a model of your teeth. Dr. Brown helps you select a shade of white that matches your surrounding teeth, places a temporary restoration on the tooth, and sends your case to a custom dental lab.

It takes 2-3 weeks for the lab to carefully prepare your new crown to our specifications, and when it’s ready, you will return to our office to have the final crown placed. We’ll ensure that it fits over your tooth perfectly, make bite adjustments as necessary, and cement the restoration securely in place.

Have Missing Teeth? Ask Us About Dental Bridges

A dental bridge replaces missing teeth by placing an artificial tooth or pontic in the open space. The pontic has crowns attached on either side that we anchor to teeth adjacent to the gap. The result is a durable tooth replacement that restores chewing function and completes your beautiful smile.

Getting the Most Out of Your Crown or Bridge

Crowns and bridges won’t get cavities, but the underlying teeth can. You can also develop gum disease that can threaten your tooth and your restoration. Avoid these scenarios by brushing at least twice a day and flossing once. Visit your Portland dentist every six months or as recommended for dental exams and cleanings to ensure that your teeth and gums are healthy.

Also, protect your crown or bridge from damage by avoiding foods that might damage it. Crunchy bread or chips and sticky candies can chip, break, or loosen your crown. For the same reason, don't chew on ice or use your teeth as tools to open packages.

With proper care, your dental crowns and bridges can last 15 years or longer.
